Assistant Professor of Economics and Public Policy

The Cornell Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy and the Department of Economics jointly invite applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Economics and Public Policy. We seek economists whose research engages with either of two broadly defined areas: (1) data science and/or technology policy or (2) environmental and/or sustainability policy. The successful candidate will receive appointments in both the Department of Economics and the Brooks School of Public Policy.

Data science and/or technology policy: We welcome economists who: (1) develop data science methods with applications to public policy; or (2) use frontier data science methods or novel forms of data to address policy relevant economic questions; or (3) study the economic and policy implications of artificial intelligence, algorithms, digital platforms, or other emerging technologies. Such research may advance data science methods, deepen our understanding of economic effects of new methods and technologies, or inform policy design and regulation of emerging technologies.

Environmental and/or sustainability policy: We welcome economists studying topics such as environmental quality, climate change, energy markets and the energy transition, environmental regulation, natural resources, pollution, sustainability, and other related topics. Research should inform the understanding, design, or evaluation of environmental policy.

Candidates in either category may use a range of theoretical or empirical approaches and should demonstrate promise for excellence in research and teaching. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching and advising in both economics and public policy at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including courses related to the candidate's area of expertise. Candidates must have received a Ph.D. in Economics, Public Policy, or a related field by July 2027.

In compliance with New York’s Pay Transparency Law, the annual base salary range for this position is $150,000 - $185,000. Cornell University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
