Compensation

Urban Institute offers a comprehensive and competitive benefits package. This position offers a minimum salary of $77,000. Salary is commensurate with experience. Candidates from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. This position has the opportunity to be fully remote.

The Opportunity:

Central to Urban’s mission is fostering a truly inclusive community that ensures ongoing relevance to a changing world. The Chief Equity Officer (CEqO) of the Urban Institute seeks an experienced professional to work with the CEqO and the Executive Team to manage and support various aspects of the organization’s work related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This work includes a special emphasis on serving as a key coordinator of plans and actions related to the organization’s Race and Equity Framework (REF), which describes the organization’s current approach to addressing anti-Black racism, promoting racial equity, and becoming the broadly inclusive institution we envision.

The ideal candidate will have at least five years of experience managing high-profile, complex projects in a fast-paced office environment. The candidate will also be an adept and detail-oriented manager with experience working collaboratively with staff across all divisions to accomplish Institute priorities.

 

Urban is committed to practicing salary transparency. The minimum salary for this position is $77,000.

 

What You’ll Do:

  • Serve as primary manager for all work related to the organization’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This work primarily focuses on the organization’s Race and Equity Framework (REF), including:
  • Serving as the day-to-day project manager of the REF; tracking and reporting on all internal and external activities related to REF
  • Coordinating and assisting Urban’s research centers and offices on the development and implementation of DEI plans
  • Managing the planning and implementation of DEI training to enhance DEI knowledge and DEI competencies for all Urban staff members
  • Serving as a liaison and key point of contact to the DEI Council on DEI activities
  • Serving as a liaison and key point of contact to Urban’s nine affinity groups
  • Working with the Chief Equity Officer to plan and execute meetings with internal stakeholders (i.e., the DEI Committee, the REF working groups, etc.) and existing and potential external partners on DEI activities
  • Researching, developing, recommending, and executing creative strategies to support the organization’s diversity goals in partnership with the Chief Equity Officer
  • Overseeing and executing specific projects (as assigned by the Chief Equity Officer) in support of DEI and REF objectives

 

Who You Are:

  • The successful candidate will have:
  • An undergraduate degree or a combination of experience for degree equivalence
  • At least five years of work experience related to social justice or a related field (in nonprofit, government, and/or corporate sectors) required, with at least three years specializing in diversity, equity, and inclusion programs
  • Strong oral and written communications skills, including presentation skills
  • Strong collaboration and relationship-building skills
  • Excellent skills in Excel and Powerpoint
  • Excellent project and time management skills, with the ability to manage numerous requests/deliverables simultaneously
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and judgment under stress and deadlines; ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality, as well as strong customer service skills
  • Knowledge of diversity-related issues, best practices, and legislation
  • A strong interest in organizational leadership and management, pressing public policy questions, and social and economic policy research
  • A strong commitment to equity and working in an inclusive and equitable organizational culture and a welcoming team environment
  • Sophisticated problem-solving capabilities and critical thinking to help address management challenges and program development
  • Ability to communicate with diplomacy, professionalism, and tact; excellent relationship management skills
  • Ability to work with functional groups, internal stakeholders, external stakeholders, and different levels of employees to effectively and professionally achieve results and promote a collaborative and supportive environment.
  • Applicants must submit a writing sample with the cover letter and resume.  The writing sample should be 2-5 pages, authored solely by the applicant, demonstrating the synthesis of complex information or a project plan.

All Urban Institute employees must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 by January 18, 2022, and comply with masking and distancing requirements, regardless of responsibilities or work location. New hires must also be fully vaccinated before starting work.  Employees may request exemption from vaccination against COVID-19 based on either a medical condition or a sincerely held religious belief that prevents them from being vaccinated.  Where such an exemption is approved, Urban will discuss with each employee potential accommodation.
