The Opportunity:

A joint venture of the Urban Institute and Brookings Institution, for twenty years, the Tax Policy Center (TPC) has served as a trusted resource for policymakers and their staffs, journalists, advocates, stakeholders, researchers, and the public. Made up of nationally recognized experts in tax, budget, and social policy, many of whom have served in high-ranking government positions, TPC provides independent, timely analysis analyses of current and longer-term fiscal issues and communicates its findings in a broadly accessible manner. 

TPC is seeking an energetic, organized, and proactive individual to serve as special assistant and project administrator to the Vice President for Tax Policy. This person will work as part of TPC’s dynamic center operations team to support the advancement of our mission, management, and operations. As a member of TPC, you will be able to see the results of your work feature regularly in presidential candidate debates, White House press briefings, and speeches on the floor of the US Senate and House of Representatives as well as top media outlets.

The ideal candidate will have 1-3 years of experience providing executive support in a fast-paced office environment and possess a keen interest in the broad range of economic and social policy issues addressed by TPC. Strong candidates will be detail-oriented, possess excellent written and verbal communications skills, and have experience working collaboratively to accomplish organizational priorities. In addition, they will be entrepreneurial, solutions-oriented, and able to assess competing priorities and determine the best course of action.

What you’ll do:

  • Manage the Vice President’s daily business by scheduling internal and external meetings, compiling background materials, synthesizing outcomes, and tracking priorities and to dos.

  • Draft correspondence and support the execution of communications including emails, briefing memos, and various other communications from the Vice President.

  • Field questions on organizational initiatives and center operations from people within the center as critical member of  a small team that serves as the center’s “go-to” resource.

  • Provide center-wide project assistance and operational support, as needed, including scheduling meetings, managing meeting logistics, drafting and refining meeting notes and next steps, supporting proposal development, and maintaining organized electronic files.

  • Perform a variety of project and operations management tasks, preparing purchase orders and expense reports, formatting and editing documents for publication.

  • Work in conjunction with TPC’s Senior Communications Manager to maintain the center’s pipeline of publications and products.

  • Provide logistical support for public and private event logistics and contribute to the center’s social media campaigns.

  • Liaise with Urban’s web support team and other members of TPC to keep TPC’s Drupal website up-to-date primarily by posting blogs and new publications.

  • Complete ad hoc special assignments and work collaboratively with the center’s operation team to manage time and problem-solve. Other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Who you are:

The successful candidate will:

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree or combination of equivalent academic and professional experience along with one to three years of work experience.  

  • Exhibit strong attention to detail and organizational skills; experience with scheduling and managing an executive’s calendar is preferred.

  • Have strong managing up skills to ensure an executive’s deadlines and priorities are met

  • Demonstrate strong verbal communication and project management skills with experience managing multiple tasks and assignments; an ability to proactively anticipate workflow and effectively plan for the timely completion of tasks and deliverables.

  • Show sense of initiative, willingness to suggest improvements or develop solutions to challenges and processes, prioritization, and ability to follow-through on projects to successful completion. 

  • Display excellent and versatile writing skills including the ability to compose messages for a variety of formats, including e-mail, formal business correspondence, social media, and other professional documents.

  • Have a can-do attitude with exceptional interpersonal skills, sound judgment, and ability to adapt to changes in work assignments, deadlines, and team environment.

  • Demonstrate commitment to principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Possess a respectful and collaborative workstyle to ensure your, the executive’s, and the center’s needs are met.

  • Exercise exceptional professional judgment and discretion as well as strict level of confidentiality.

  • Exhibit advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, MS Word, Outlook and PowerPoint; SalesForce proficiency is a plus.
